AIS AUTOMATIC IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM
What is AIS...?
The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a shipboard short range (typ. 30 nm) tracking system used
on ships to identify and locate vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships and
with shore based stations. Position, course and speed of the nearby vessels can be displayed on a ship’s
mapping plotter. AIS also allow maritime authorities to track and monitor vessel movements along their
coast. . . AIS uses VHF radio broadcasts to transmit vital information in regular intervals.
